Exploring Topics to Talk About

Learn how to browse topics to talk about, how they're categorized, and how to start one.

This guide explains how to find a topic to talk about and start one — all from your home screen.

Every conversation with Ember has a purpose: usually it's to record a memory about a specific moment in your life. Topics are curated prompts that give that conversation focus and direction.

Your topics live right on your home screen, organized by life era — Childhood, Teenage Years, Twenties, Thirties, 40-60, and 60+. Scroll up and down to move between eras, and scroll a row sideways to see more topics within one. You can also jump straight to an era using the list on the left.

Tap any topic card to open its Topic card. There you'll see:

  1. A short description of the topic — what the conversation covers and roughly how long it takes.
  2. A Start Topic button to record it yourself. If you've already begun it you'll see Resume, and if you've finished it you'll see Revisit.
  3. An Invite someone option, to ask a family member or someone in your circle to record the topic instead. (See the guide on inviting others to record a memory.)
  4. An Add a cover photo option, to give the memory a photo before or after you record.

If you don't see the people you expect when inviting, use the circle switcher at the top left to change circles.

Want to talk about something that isn't listed? Every era row has a Create Your Own Topic card, and the floating Expand Ember button starts a free conversation any time. The separate "Create Your Own Topic" guide covers this in more detail.
