Shaping your circle's topics

Write your own topics, choose which ones your circle sees, and ask for a story.

Topics are the prompts your people record stories about in the Ember app. Open your circle in the admin dashboard and choose Topics. The page has three views: Your topics, Requests, and Topic library.

Write your own topic

  1. Choose Create a topic.
  2. Give it a Topic name (what your people see on the card) and say What is it about? in a sentence or two.
  3. Under What do you hope people talk about?, describe what you want to hear. This guides the conversation.
  4. Add Questions you would like asked: at least one, and up to eight.
  5. Optionally add a cover photo, tell Ember how to steer the conversation, and choose a chapter.
  6. Under Who is it for?, choose Just my circle or Share with the Ember community.
  7. Choose Submit for review, or Save draft to finish later.

Ember reviews every new topic before your circle sees it. While it waits, the topic shows In review. When it is approved it shows Live, and your circle can record about it. If Ember cannot approve it, it shows Not approved with a note. Choose Edit, change it, and send it again.

Choose which topics your circle sees

Topic library lists Ember’s topics by chapter. Switch a topic off and it is no longer offered to your circle. Memories already recorded about it stay exactly as they are. You can also show or hide a whole chapter at once.

Ask someone for a story

  1. Choose Ask for a story.
  2. Choose who to ask and which topic, either one your circle wrote or one of Ember’s.
  3. Choose Send request.

They get a notification to record their answer in the app. To be asked, a member needs an email address or phone number on file.

Requests nobody has recorded yet are listed under Requests. Choose Remind to nudge someone. You can send the first reminder 24 hours after asking, and then one every 24 hours.

Members can see your circle’s topics here, but only admins can write topics and ask for stories.
